Legendary photographer David Bailey captures Nagaland

Photo: He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1979. After the Nagaland sojourn, Bailey will leave for New York on another assignment.

Internationally acclaimed legendary British photographer, David Bailey has fulfilled one of his many “curiosities” by being a guest in the land of festivals Nagaland since October 22. For the last few days, the camera wizard has been spinning vignettes of Nagas according to his own tastes and sensibilities.

The 75 year old celebrated photographer along with his two assistants and a facilitator Amrit Sharma from Anglian Holdings, Delhi, visited seven villages in the Land of Anghs – Mon district, including Lungwa bordering Myanmar.  He also visited some villages in Kohima and Hebron in Dimapur.

In an exclusive interview with Nagaland Post at Razhu Pru, Misison Compound Kohima, Bailey said he was really curious to visit Nagaland for quite some time now.

But the British legend’s facial expression could not betray the fatigue and hardship he had to go through while travelling to his destinations in Nagaland. With an unmistakable affirmation, he said, “There was no road at all” when he was asked about his sojourn and the journey he embarked on.

Though, he did not disclose much about what he did in Mon, one could be sure the legend must have created magical images out the thriving lives of the people in the Eastern Nagaland district.

In Kohima, Bailey has captured assorted pictures of people from various walks of life at Razhu Pru. While praising Razhu Pru for its commendable hospitality, he said he “found the best place”.

According to Bailey, Nagas here were “good and smart”. The legendary photographer also disclosed that he wants to work on a book on the life of Nagas but added that he would avoid focusing on cultural and economic differences.

David Bailey, following a year-long service with the Royal Air Force in Malaysia in 1959, began his long and distinguished career when he was appointed a photographic assistant at the John French Studio in London. Bailey had recently released “Delhi Dilemma”, a two-volume work documenting the capital of India in 2009, just before the Commonwealth Games. Anglian Holdings supported Bailey’s trip to Delhi to shoot “Delhi Dilemma”.

However, this renowned ace photographer is known more for his works on the “swinging sixties”. It is worth mentioning here that Mick Jagger, the Kray Brothers and the Beatles, Bailey captured them all. Bailey’s association with British Vogue and contributions to fashion photography have been acknowledged worldwide.

He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1979. After the Nagaland sojourn, Bailey will leave for New York on another assignment.

He said this during a discussion hour with various organizations on SVEEP (systematic voters’ education and electoral participation) for Kohima district on Wednesday at Kohima DC conference hall.

Honje said registering all genuine voters in the state was top priority and mandatory in the on-going photo e-roll campaign.

He said in Kohima district, so far the turn up for e-roll registration was around 70% and appealed to the citizens to enroll themselves, without which no one would be allowed to cast their vote.

He informed that ECI has directed the state to rectify the election code of conduct and strictly adhere to clean and fair election. He lauded the NGOs and Churches of the state for actively involving for clean and fair election and suggested tying-up with the village council for more effective operation.

He said all bogus, death, double entry, wrong age and information would be deleted during this campaign and requested Church leaders to create awareness among its members.

Photo:  SDO Civil, Mon Keyinrangding Hgui inaugurating the training programme

Three-day training programme for chairmen, BOD, secretaries of ICDP beneficiary societies on management of cooperative societies was inaugurated by SDO Civil, Mon (Sadar) Keyinrangding Hgui as the chief guest on October 30 at council hall, Mon.

In his inaugural speech, Keyinrangding said majority of the public of the district were illiterate and so the government was providing enough funds for upliftment of the district.

He therefore called upon the beneficiaries to be more sensitive and active in carrying out various schemes and projects for the betterment of the district through cooperative societies.

Citing that the district was blessed with fertile soil suitable for various agricultural productions, he appealed to the beneficiaries to give due importance to agriculture and agri. related activities and boost the economy of the society and the nation.

The SDO civil also urged the cooperative department to conduct more trainings in future for the benefit of the public and added that cooperative was a Naga way of life.

Registrar of Cooperative Societies, T. Imkonglemla who graced the occasion as the guest of honour said after the liberation of the country’s economy, the government had gradually stopped its grants and subsidies to cooperative societies.

In such a scenario, she said the only option for the cooperative societies to survive was to adopt a complete professional approach in managing their cooperatives as business entity.

Emphasizing on cooperative education, she said cooperative institutions like Amul, Mother Diary, Sugar Mills of North East India and Textiles Mills of South India are successful because these cooperative institutions compete with other private companies and give top priority to cooperative education and the members are all cooperatively trained.

However, she said on the contrary cooperative societies in Nagaland are not successful because it lacks cooperative education, proper accounts and management procedure and are managed by a single man or a family.

She also informed that credit management like funds and loans are vital requirements for the success of any society for growth and expansion of business.

“Mismanagement of these vital resources destroys the business of the society”, she added. Therefore she called upon the cooperative societies to learn the important aspects of cooperative and loan advances given to them for recovery.
